About me.
Itzel Berrio Hayward (she/her)
Before founding Attuned Living in 2010, I’d been practicing law for over a decade. I originally became a lawyer because I believe that justice is at the foundation of our collective liberation.
In law school, I studied critical race theory and worked closely with Professor Derrick Bell as his student and teaching assistant. After graduating, I received a public policy fellowship and spent nearly 15 years representing underrepresented and marginalized communities in California with a focus on consumer protection and economic justice.
That work was deeply meaningful for me. At the same time, I began learning more about restorative justice and became increasingly interested in not only dismantling systemic inequities but also building systems rooted in care, repair, and transformation. To do that, however, I knew there was a lot I needed to learn — and unlearn.
By then, I’d already been practicing yoga and meditation for about 10 years. So I left my job, entered a yoga teacher training, and moved into an ashram (a spiritual community). I studied holistic healing practices alongside nonviolent communication and transformative justice. I trained with teachers and mentors to become a coach and facilitator, and learned how to offer my work through an anti-racist, trauma-informed, and mindful lens. After that, rather than return to a conventional legal career, I decided to start Attuned Living.
Today, through Attuned Living, I support organizations and individuals on their journeys toward personal and collective transformation. My services are centered around facilitation, compassionate communication, healing, and equity.
I also serve as an Adjunct Professor at UC Law San Francisco, where I teach Facilitation for Attorneys, a course designed to help future legal professionals lead more inclusive, collaborative, and effective processes in the spaces they serve.
I live with my partner and kiddo in Oakland, California, which sits on the territory of xučyun (Huichin), the ancestral and unceded land of the Chochenyo -speaking Lisjan Ohlone people.

Itzel possesses a rare combination of wisdom, compassion, and patience.
I cannot recommend her highly enough.
